    TIM'S BOOK CLUB #6

    American Pastoral by Philip Roth

I read this quite a while ago, when I was writing songs for the second album. It's a very heavy family epic that follows a guy called the Swede. He runs a successful business in New York City and has a lovely family, and it basically charts the disintegration of his family and his values. I'm sure there have been lots and lots of books written about that kind of thing, but this particular one stands out because it's so psychologically complex and you never know what is going to happen next.

The character does everything that you think would be the right thing to do. You don't have that sense you often get with a film or maybe a less dense book, where you can see the mistakes being made and you think "Oh God, that's going to go wrong." He has as much intelligence as you could ask him to have. He attempts to do everything sensitively and tries to be a good parent and husband. But the twists and turns of the way that it all works out are really complex. It's essentially just a totally unglamourous story that could be happening to any of us really. But from a human and psychological point of view, it's incredibly interesting. It's also really quite depressing.

The book definitely shares some of that darkness that runs through Under The Iron Sea. Songs like Atlantic are probably closely related. And, actually, at one point Crystal Ball was called American Pastoral, after the book. The lyrics of that song were actually based around the phrase "American Pastoral" and some of the story, for quite a while. I can't remember why I changed it in the end.

I think my influences as a songwriter come from far and wide, but especially from books. I'm quite a slow reader, and I think I really engage with a book emotionally. Often a book will really be a big part of my life for however long it takes me to read it. Sometimes I'll be dipping into it for weeks and months, reading a few pages at a time, because I have a terribly short attention span. And when I'm not reading it, I'll find myself thinking about it, and talking to other people about it. I think all that does definitely come out in my songwriting.

    Biography 2010

    KEANE are:

    Tom Chaplin – vocals, etc.
    Richard Hughes – drums, etc.
    Tim Rice-Oxley – piano, etc.

    Biography 2010

Not many British bands these days have more than one million-selling album, let alone three. Fewer still manage to replicate - and maintain - that success outside the UK. And only a tiny number are able to continually develop their sound as their career progresses. But, in the last decade, Keane have achieved all of those things and a whole lot more. After selling 10 million copies of their three award-winning albums, it's no exaggeration to say that Keane are firmly established as one of the world's most successful, innovative and cherished bands. And, as far as they're concerned, they're only just getting started.

The three members of Keane - Tom Chaplin, Tim Rice-Oxley and Richard Hughes - began making music together as teenagers in sleepy East Sussex. But it was only after years of energy-sapping dead ends that things started to go right for them. After a chance gig sighting in 2003, Fierce Panda founder Simon Williams offered the band a limited edition single release. That quickly led to a deal with Island Records, which led to Hopes And Fears, Keane's brilliant 2004 debut album. Driven by literate, heart-tugging anthems like Somewhere Only We Know, Everybody's Changing and Bedshaped, the record catapulted Keane to global success, selling almost six million copies and picking up countless awards (indeed, even in 2010 it has been nominated for the Best British Album of 30 Years award at the Brits).

In 2006, Keane released their second album, Under The Iron Sea. Compared to their debut, it was a dark, brooding affair, powered by the hurt and frustration of a band stretched to breaking point by two years of constant touring. But, once again, at its core were Tim Rice-Oxley's majestic melodies and Tom Chaplin's rich, powerful voice. The incredible response to the record at the band's increasingly large live shows was, ultimately, to reinvigorate the friendships they've shared since primary school.

Keane's third album, Perfect Symmetry, followed in 2008, once again marking a genuinely impressive stylistic shift. Recorded in Berlin, Paris and London it was the first Keane album to feature musical saw, saxophone and vocals recorded through a drum. In other words, it was the sound of a band positively revelling in the joys of making music again. Its lead single, Spiralling, was a bouncing, Bowie-tinged, synth-pop belter, which won the Q Award for Best Track of the Year before the album itself was even released (once it was, Q's readers soon voted that Album of the Year too.)

The band toured Perfect Symmetry around the world, playing to packed arenas in 28 countries, from Russia to Australia, Colombia to South Korea and Lebanon to Switzerland. When they had gaps in their schedule, they would head into studios to work on tracks - not with any particular purpose in mind, just because it's what they enjoy doing most. "It's incredibly refreshing in the middle of a long tour to go into a studio and create something," says Tim Rice-Oxley. "It's what we ended up doing on most of our days off."

Those tracks would eventually come to form a new eight track EP, Night Train, which will be released globally on 10th May 2010. Taking its title from the band's favoured mode of transport during the tour (the Moscow to St Petersburg train was particularly memorable), it demonstrates yet another sure-footed sonic swerve. Highlights include Keane's two genre-busting collaborations with fast-rising Somali/Canadian rapper K'Naan, who they met through a mutual appreciation (Keane are surprisingly popular in hip hop circles, with Kanye West another big fan). Over three days in a London studio, Keane and K'Naan created the irrepressible Stop For A Minute and the Rocky-inspired Looking Back. "I think those tracks show us in a completely different light," says Chaplin.

Another definite standout on Night Train is Ishin Denshin (You've Got To Help Yourself), an addictive electro-pop cover of the Yellow Magic Orchestra song which features Japanese baile funk MC Tigarah. "That song pretty much exemplifies the way we did the record," explains Rice-Oxley. "I worked on the original idea on a plane, Richard recorded the drums in DC, Tom did his vocals in Copenhagen, Tigarah did hers in LA and we finished it off on the tour bus. And I'm hugely pleased with the end result."

Night Train also includes the gorgeous, 80s-flavoured Your Love, which hangs around a rare lead vocal from Rice-Oxley, a man more renowned for his Ivor Novello-winning song writing than his singing. "All of these songs were recorded with a spirit of 'Why not?’" he says. "We didn't labour over making this record, or worry about it, we just enjoyed experimenting with things."

The result is another Keane record that's surprising, challenging and imaginative - but still built around tunes you'll be whistling for weeks. When Keane first got together all those years ago, three of the bands they most admired were the Beatles, Radiohead and Blur. What made all of those acts special was that although nobody could ever predict what they'd do next, you knew it would be worth hearing. With the release of Night Train, that's an exclusive club to which Keane have surely now gained membership.

En 2006 Keane editaron su segundo trabajo, Under The Iron Sea.

    SAVE BBC 6 MUSIC RADIO

We were really disappointed to learn of the BBC's decision to close 6 Music. The station is a wonderful place to hear new and alternative music - music which simply doesn't get played elsewhere on UK national radio. It is also staffed by some of our most knowledgeable and entertaining DJs, who've helped break and develop many acts, including Keane. If the station does close, it would be a huge blow to the British music scene.

But there is something we can do. The BBC Trust will have to approve 6 Music's closure and have indicated they may not do so, if enough people show their support for the station. If you agree that 6 Music should be saved then please do any or all of the following:

Keane "Night Train" Track by Track Album Review

    Keane-promo-2010

Keane's "Night Train" sounds like a record the British trio had to make to get some musical urges out of their system. Listening to this album, it seems that after producing some of pop's most gorgeous ballads ever, the group wanted to let loose, let their hair down and have some fun with it.

The result is a very diverse pop record that is a classy, accomplished blend of musical styles, global rhythms and exciting new soundscapes - ranging from '80s flavored electro-pop to energetic acoustic rock to their signature pop balladry. Following the excellent "Perfect Symmetry," this new effort demonstrates once again that Tom Chaplin, Tim Rice Oxley and Richard Hughes are able to keep their new music fresh and invigorated while always presenting a sound that is undeniable their own.

To be released in the U.S. on May 11, the album also includes Somali rapper K'Naan and Japanese baile funk emcee Tigarah who add a distinct global flavor to "Night Train." Pretty fitting as most of this record was written and recorded while the group was touring across the globe last year. Here a quick run-down of the album's 8 tracks that make up Keane's fourth studio album:

    Your Love
A throbbing, mid-tempo '80s flavored synth-pop gem that features the rare lead vocals of Tim Rice-Oxley. At first his voice took me off guard as his style and vocal inflection is very similar to Tom Chaplin's, but his vocals are smoother, slicker. Reminiscent of A-ha's Morten Harket. Gorgeous, sparkly chorus and an epic middle eight that sent chills up my spine. Very good and a track that clearly echoes the melodic sentiments of "Hopes & Fears." This is one of my favorite tracks on "Night Train" and will certainly be a fan favorite as well.

    Stop For Minute
This celebratory track features the much-anticipated collaboration with Somali rapper K'Naan. The song is unmistakable a Keane production though with its instantly catchy piano-driven melody. K'Naan duets with Tom in the verses and chorus of the song, and lays down some rhymes during the bridge towards the end of the song. "Stop For Minute" packs a powerful, positive message and has a great singalong chorus.

    My Shadow
Third track on the album is a signature Keane ballad that primarily relies on Tim's pacing piano work and Tom's angelic vocals. A great reminder of why Keane is a world-class band. So beautiful. "Shine a light on me and you will see my shadow on every wall," Tom sings.

    Looking Back
Fun, brassy tune with a stomping horn section. Has a bit of bossa nova flavor to it. Would not be surprised if the guys wrote this during their South American tour dates. K'Naan adds a few of his raps, which is unexpected but totally works.

Ishin Denshin (You've Got To Help Yourself)
A very joyous electro-pop cover of the Yellow Magic Orchestra song that features Japanese baile funk MC Tigarah. This song was a truly international endeavor. Tim worked on the original idea on a plane, Richard recorded the drums in D.C., Tom did his vocals in Copenhagen, Tigarah did hers in L.A. and the group finished it off on a tour bus. I must say that the result feels a little disjointed - Tigarah's vocals don't gel all that well with Tom's.

    House Lights
Brief atmospheric interlude without vocals. Has a great cinematic quality to it.

    Clear Skies
This song features Keane like you rarely hear them. Song starts off acoustically with handclaps, guitars and Tom's vocals, which gradually build to the chorus when drums, bass and xylophone are added. This is a really fun experimentation with different instruments that works well and continues to grow on me the more I hear it. You can hear how bands like Radiohead and Blur inspired this track.

    Back In Time
The tracks opens with frantic, jagged synths much like the opening of "Is It Any Wonder" that is repeated in the chorus. "Back In Time" is how Keane does rock and roll.

    RICHARD'S PICS FROM TIM'S STUDIO

    howdy,

had a really great day with tim and tom in tim's studio yesterday. i went there to take some photos, and ended up laying down some drum tracks on a couple of songs. was nice to use the drums i bought tim about 2 years ago, precisely for moments like this! only four mics around the kit, but it sounded great. anyway, i remembered to take some photos, and here they are. hope everyone is well, and rest-assured, we are looking forward to coming out to play over the summer.
